The second half of John McCain’s interview on the O’Reilly Factor aired last night on Fox News. Some excerpts:
If it was not for the issue that we were just discussing, that 9/11 changed this country and the world and our challenge, I would not be running. I believe my whole life, my inspiration, my heroes, and my experience have qualified me to serve. I’m not the youngest candidate, but I’m the best prepared. I am committed to seeing this nation through one of the most difficult periods of our history, and like Ronald Reagan, I approach it with optimism, with hope and belief in the American people, in the future of this nation, and that our best days are ahead of us. (Fox News, “The O’Reilly Factor,” 5/31/07)
I think that most Americans appreciate the fact that this is a titanic struggle between everything we stand for and believe in and radical Islamic extremism. We have to win. We can win. We will win. We will never surrender. They will. (Fox News, “The O’Reilly Factor,” 5/31/07)
I will say that this strategy has only been going on for about four or five months. Neighborhoods in Baghdad, I emphasize, are safer, not safe, and there have been improvements. (Fox News, “The O’Reilly Factor,” 5/31/07)

I doubt it. And even if I am wrong, I think such a Republican presidential nominee would be leading a broken, divided, and crippled party to a general election defeat. I think the formula for GOP success is the same as it has always been, in order: 1) Nominate a candidate who can first unite [...]

Hopefully Affleck will make his pilgrimage to SLC to apologize. Somehow, as a Mormon, I find it comforting to see Affleck call my religion questionable.
Ryan Sager analyzes the most recent poll of GOP primary voters that narrows the GOP field to Rudy, McCain, and Romney:
Yes, those are the big three. But not very much public polling at this point narrows down the choices as such — mostly voters are being asked to chose from a list of 10 or [...]
John McCain today reminded us all of the stakes of this election. Responding to Senator Clinton and Obama’s votes against emergency funding for our troops in harm’s way in Iraq and Afghanistan he said the following:
I was very disappointed to see Senator Obama and Senator Clinton embrace the policy of surrender by voting against funds to support our brave men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This vote may win favor with MoveOn and liberal primary voters, but it’s the equivalent of waving a white flag to al Qaeda.
There is no room for political grandstanding in fighting the war against terror; too bad the leading Democratic contenders don’t understand that.
We’ve talked a lot on this blog about the fact that John McCain is running for President of the United States not to be someone, but to do something - to lead. Leaders have to make the tough decisions, often in the face of difficult opposition. John McCain is not afraid of making the hard choices. Despite loud public opposition, he remains steadfast in his support of the new strategy in Iraq and in his belief that victory in Iraq is essential to future stability in the Middle East and a stronger national security at home.
On its editorial page, today’s Union Leadernotes that John McCain is again putting principle ahead of politics in his push for stronger border security and a comprehensive immigration reform. Writes the Union Leader:
As with Iraq, McCain is taking an unpopular position because he believes there is no better option available — with the full knowledge that doing so could destroy his last chance to become President.
We disagree with the senator about the immigration bill. But we admire his determination to do what he believes is right even at great personal risk. McCain is gambling his political career on his belief that Americans want a leader, not a follower. So far, no other presidential candidate has had the guts to do the same.
In discussing his position on the Iraq war, John McCain has often said, “I’d rather lose a campaign than lose a war.” On immigration, he’d rather get something accomplished - namely securing our border, putting tough enforcement laws on the books, and building a guest worker program. Additionally, he recognizes that if we are going to address the national security concerns caused by our government’s past failures, we must find a way to bring the current illegal immigrants out of the shadows. This bill accomplishes those tasks.
We endured 8 years of a finger-in-the-wind politician in the 1990s, the last thing we need now is another one; especially as our nation continues the fight against Islamic extremists dead-set on the destruction of our way of life. John McCain is a leader of principled consistency, the kind of leader our country calls for today.
Campaign Closet is what I am going to call those references out in the public domain that GOP presidential candidates would just as soon not see hit the light of day and be able to hide somewhere.

In the face of McCain’s accusations of flip-flopping on immigration, Mitt Romney today opted for the roll-your-eyes-and-chuckle instead of the counterpunch. Speaking briefly with reporters in Dallas this afternoon, Romney responded with a laugh to McCain’s “shoot the Guatemalans off his lawn” potshot — which McCain liked enough to repeat to television cameras again last [...]
There’s been a lot of movement on Intrade the last couple weeks - including some new milestones that bear reporting. The current standings, according to the investors, look like this:
Giuliani - 28.1
Romney - 20.7
F Thompson - 20.1
McCain - 18.0
These numbers are:
the lowest Giuliani’s been since he announced he was in the race,
the first time Romney [...]

From the NRO:
“Maybe I should wait a couple of weeks and see if [Romney’s position] changes.†McCain then got in a one-two punch that hit both Romney’s alleged exaggerations about his hunting experience and his employment of immigrants for landscaping work: “Maybe he’ll get out his small varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans [...]
I think the report from Paul Kane of the Washington Post about the confrontation between Senator John McCain and Senator John Cornyn yesterday in the Capitol over the immigration legislative compromise speaks for itself. This does not seem like an example of presidential behavior and temperament to me.
Not only is the immigration bill compromise devoid of conservative principles, Congress is trying to fast track it into law with little inspection or debate, led by the pompous Senator John McCain (a heroic American but lousy Republican), who has opined in this respect:
“This is the first step. We can and must complete this legislation sooner rather [...]
