John McCain, Entitlements, and Health Care Reform

August 20th, 2007 · No Comments

Today we have a special blog report regarding John McCain and Health Care Reform from Douglas Holtz-Eakin.

John McCain is a conservative who will veto wasteful spending and balance the budget. He will reform government to protect Social Security and reform health care. But this week he gave an AARP audience in South Carolina a short display of his inner wonk. The topic was entitlements and the centerpiece was three charts, but the message was unmistakable: genuine, market-based health care reform is imperative to making our economic future secure.

Al Qaeda’s Travel Agent

Please take some time to read Sen. Joe Lieberman’s Op-Ed in today’s Wall Street Journal regarding one of the many facets of our struggle against radical Islamic extremism. While General Petraeus’s new strategy on the ground in Iraq is disrupting al Qaeda and showing signs of real progress in places that were once written off, the struggle against al Qaeda is not limited to Iraq. Senator Lieberman writes:

Recently declassified American intelligence reveals just how much al Qaeda in Iraq is dependent for its survival on the support it receives from the broader, global al Qaeda network, and how most of that support flows into Iraq through one country — Syria. Al Qaeda in Iraq is sustained by a transnational network of facilitators and human smugglers, who replenish its supply of suicide bombers — approximately 60 to 80 Islamist extremists, recruited every month from across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, and sent to meet their al Qaeda handlers in Syria, from where they are taken to Iraq to blow themselves up to kill countless others.

The Syrian government’s lack of effort (or downright complicity) to stop the inflow of foreign fighters demonstrates how the threat facing our country goes far beyond Iraq and how groups like al Qaeda are using Iraq to fight us, and they won’t stop there. If we abandon the battlefield to al Qaeda, they will proclaim victory to boost recruitment worldwide and use Iraq to spread chaos and carnage. American security would be severely damaged.

We must give General Petraeus’s strategy the time necessary to succeed. Iraq is a central front in our war on radical Islamic Extremism, we know it and after reading Sen. Lieberman’s Op-Ed and past al Qaeda statements, it is clear that the terrorists know it as well.
